iMacs are revolutionary computers that are capable of running powerful applications, processing data at ultra fast speeds and so much more. They are quite popular in educational institutions, offices, homes, and many other places these days. However, many people that use iMacs aren’t sure how to perform hardware upgrades on these computers because of their simplistic design. One of the most common upgrades that users find themselves wanting to complete is the RAM (or memory) upgrade. To be honest, it was the very first upgrade that I wanted to complete on my iMac.

Fortunately, an Apple representative taught me how to perform an iMac memory upgrade myself and I was truly surprised at how easy the entire process was. Because the upgrade was so straightforward and quick, I decided that it was only natural that I shared my experience with the rest of the world. If you’re not interested in spending the extra money on letting a technician complete the iMac memory upgrade on your computer, this is truly your best route.

There is a small slot on the bottom of the iMac’s screen that is noticeable when holding the computer with the screen facing up. It looks like a rectangular panel, and this is actually where the memory is stored inside of the computer. Obviously, Apple has made it quite easy to access the memory, and this is why it’s pretty easy to complete an iMac memory upgrade yourself.

Be sure to spread a soft cloth or towel across a flat surface (such as a table), because you’re going to be placing the iMac on this surface. Once you’ve placed your cloth or towel, make sure that the iMac is powered off and is completely disconnected from any cables, and slowly lay the iMac onto the surface with the screen facing down on the cloth. The Apple logo on the back of your computer should be facing upwards toward the ceiling.

Once you’ve placed the iMac in a good workspace, be sure to raise the stand up so that you can see the RAM access door. Next, use a Philips screwdriver to remove the small screws on the RAM access door on the bottom of the screen. Once you’ve unscrewed them, the panel should completely come off.

Now you should see two tabs protruding from the inside of the RAM compartment. You’ll need to gently push and pull these to remove the existing RAM from the compartment. Once the memory has slid out, insert your iMac memory upgrade, and keep gently pressing until you hear a small click. Be sure to tuck the tabs back and re-attach the panel using the screws and Philips screw driver.

Once you’ve reassembled the panel door, all that’s left to do is stand the computer back up, re-attach any cables, and power the computer back on. The computer should instantly recognize the upgrade! Now you can enjoy faster processing, less stall time, and so much more. And just think about the money you saved by not hiring a professional!
